Cholera Claimed Over 76 Lives In Ebonyi State.
Ebonyi state Commissoner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezurike has revealed that cholera disease in the state has claimed over 78 lives with five months.
During his quartely presentation on the state affairs of the ministry, Dr Umezurike said that the outbreak raveged thirty eight communities of Ebonyi state out of which, eleven local government areas were affected, adding that with two weeks of assumption into office, the ministry was able to control the five months outbreak.
He also stated that the current lassa fever outbreak that was reported early this year killed about 14 people in state, 10 w suspected cases while 4 w confirmed cases of lassa fever.
He added that seventy-seven w suspected cases of lassa fever recorded and 10 people died, while confirmed cases were six and only two people where saved bringing the total number of lives lost to the deadly disease to sixteen.
Dr Umezuruile also thanked governor Umahi for his timely intervention providing the much need fund for the ministry to fight the disease, adding that his decision to set up virology center which has reached 95 per cent completion has placed the state at a greater advantage to combat lassa fever.
He noted that only t lassa fever patients were yet to be discharged while other have been treated and certified lass free. Assuring Ebonyians that the ministry will continue to pit in professional competence to ensure that the disease is completele eradicated in the state.
Speaking on the immunization activities of the ministry, Dr. Umezuruile said, since w came on board we have sustained all immunization activities ot ensure that Ebonyi children do not die of vaccine preventable diseases”. Whilst he listed the immunization activities to include “Second round maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week 14th-18th December, 2015, integrated Measles campaign in Ebonyi State 28th Jan. 1, Feb. 2016, National Immunizations Plus Days NIPD in which Ebonyi State participate actively and had more than 1## p cent coverage amongst others.
On malaria control, elimination and other diseases he noted that th ministry in collaboration with her foreign partners lunch a campaign where over 1.7 million insecticide treated bed nets were distributed to Ebonyians as well as other malaria control measures which he said earned Ebonyi first position in the control of malaria in the whole country.
He added that within the first year in office, the ministry also attracted an ultra modern chest clinic form Chevron and Agbanic partners for the treatment of drug assistant TB related diseases to be sited at Mile 4 hospital Abakaliki.
The commissioner also laid to bare their successes on Installation of Incinerators, Guinea worm outbreak, Donation of equipments by the state government, and the state of Ebonyi General Hospital as well as their proposed bills to Ebonyi Assembly.
