Jailbreak In Ebonyi, Inmates Death Rises To 19
The attempted jailbreak at the Abakaliki Maximum Prisons, Ebonyi State, resulted to the death of 19 inmates.
MediaNaija gathered that the inmates who allegedly went on rampage tried breaking out from the Abakaliki Maximum Prision some of which sustain gunshot wounds which landed them at the Federal Teaching Hospital, FETHA 1, Abakaliki.
Some of the inmates rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, FETHA 1, could not survive the gunshot wounds making the total number of inmates who died in the attempted jailbreak 19.
According to the state Comptroller, Mrs Adaobi Oputa, said 16 inmates were rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, FETHA 1, including three prison staffs who were injured in the cause of the attempted jailbreak.
Reports says that the some of the female inmates were allegedly r*ped by the male inmates during the violent protest, the wounded female inmates were quickly rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
After a brief meeting with the Governor of Ebonyi state, Governor Dave Umahi and the Comptroller General of Nigeria Prison Service Mr Ja-afaru Ahmed, the governor confirmed that only six inmates died in that failed jailbreak while ten others sustained serious injuries and were taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, FETHA 1 for medical attention.
The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Prison Service said when he visited the prison to know the reason for the violent protest he was told that some of the inmates refused to submit themselves to prison authority.
He said that the reason why Nigeria prisons are congested is because of slow justice, he urged that some of the inmates should be tried as as soon as possible to avoid issues like this from happening again
He said the Abakaliki Maximum prison is built to accommodate 378 inmates but is currently accommodating over 968 inmates an out of that figure 812 inmates are awaiting trials.
